Givens LLP Chartered Professional Accountants
is in search of a highly skilled
SENIOR ACCOUNTANT to join our growing team!
THE ORGANIZATION
We are growing, and we are looking for exceptional people who want to grow with us. The Senior Accountant role is a hands-on role for an experienced accounting professional who takes ownership, builds trusted client relationships, and wants more than a job where they simply complete a checklist.
You will join an ambitious, supportive team, work with a wide range of owner-managed businesses, and play a key role in delivering accounting, tax, advisory, and cloud-based solutions. Depending on experience, strengths, and interests, you may also contribute to mentoring team members and helping clients improve their accounting processes and operations.
For 80 years, Givens LLP has helped Alberta entrepreneurs build stronger businesses. Today, we are growing our firm, expanding our services, and investing in the people who will help shape what comes next.
We move quickly, set a high standard, and care deeply about doing excellent work. You will be trusted with significant responsibility, supported by approachable leaders, and empowered to use your experience, judgment, and expertise to create value for clients and contribute to the continued growth of our firm.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:
- Meaningful client relationships and the opportunity to become a trusted advisor
- Exposure to multiple industries, accounting systems, and complex business challenges
- Opportunities to mentor and support junior team members
- A collaborative team that values strong relationships, accountability, and results
- A 37.5-hour work week, flexible hours, flex Fridays, hybrid work arrangements where appropriate, minimal tax-season overtime, and a flexible wellness benefits package
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Senior Accountant, you will manage client engagements independently while supporting the development of team members. Responsibilities may include:
-
- Prepare and review compilation engagements, year-end files, and financial statements
- Prepare and review corporate and personal income tax returns
- Analyze financial information, investigate discrepancies, and resolve accounting issues
- Provide guidance and practical recommendations to clients on accounting, tax, and business matters
- Work directly with owner-managed businesses to support their financial reporting and compliance needs
- Review bookkeeping, payroll, sales tax filings, and month-end reporting
- Use CaseWare, TaxPrep, QuickBooks Online, Sage, Excel, and other cloud tools to create accurate and efficient client workflows
- Communicate directly with clients and teammates to obtain information, resolve issues, and keep work moving
- Identify opportunities to improve client processes, controls, and accounting systems
- Support and mentor junior accountants and accounting technicians
- Manage priorities, budgets, deadlines, and client expectations while maintaining a high standard of quality
WHO WILL THRIVE HERE
We are looking for people who are humble, hungry, and people-smart:
- Humble: You are open to feedback, willing to learn, and focused on the team rather than your ego.
- Hungry: You take initiative, follow through, and look for the next way to add value.
- People-smart: You communicate clearly, read the situation, and build trust with clients and coworkers.
You will also be successful if you:
- Care about accuracy and take ownership of the quality of your work
- Are organized, adaptable, and calm when priorities shift
- Enjoy solving problems rather than waiting to be told every step
- Can work independently while staying connected to the team
- Enjoy mentoring others and contributing to team success
- Want to build a long-term career in a growing, fast-paced professional firm
WHAT YOU BRING
REQUIRED:
A CPA designation, or equivalent public practice experience with demonstrated technical accounting and tax expertise
A minimum of 5-7 years of accounting experience, preferably in public practice
Experience preparing and reviewing compilation engagements and year-end files
Experience preparing corporate and personal income tax returns
Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting principles and tax requirements
Experience working directly with small-business and owner-managed clients
Working knowledge of QuickBooks Online, Sage, CaseWare, and TaxPrep
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word
Strong written and verbal English communication skills
The ability to work in Canada
Strong assets, but not deal-breakers:
CPA designation
Experience reviewing staff work and mentoring junior team members
Experience with tax planning and advisory services
Experience improving accounting processes and cloud bookkeeping workflows
Experience working with owner-managed businesses across multiple industries
You do not need to check every box. If the role and our way of working sound like a strong fit, we want to hear from you.
